Tip: If you don't fully meet these requirements, the EU Blue Card could be an attractive alternative for highly qualified researchers.

Short-term research stay (up to 180 days):
For research stays of a maximum of 180 days within a 360-day period, you do not need an additional visa or residence permit for Germany if you already have a valid residence permit from another EU country.
Requirement:
The host research institution in Germany must report the research project to the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees).
Details about the report can be found on the BAMF website.
Long-term stay (up to 1 year):
If you plan to conduct research in Germany for more than 180 days and up to one year, you will need a residence permit for mobile researchers under Section 18f of the Residence Act. The following conditions apply:
Valid residence permit from an EU Member State for the purpose of research, covering the entire planned period
Valid passport or passport replacement
