EU Blue Card for Chinese nationals – Living and working in Germany

The EU Blue Card represents an attractive residence permit for highly qualified professionals from China who intend to work in Germany. Both Chinese academics and IT specialists, as well as German companies seeking to recruit qualified personnel from China, benefit from the numerous advantages and legal safeguards offered by the Blue Card.

I will explain to you which requirements must be met, which advantages the EU Blue Card offers compared to other residence permits and how you can successfully apply – whether as a skilled worker or as an employer to support your skilled worker.

Advantages of the EU Blue Card – Your advantages as a lawyer in Germany

The EU Blue Card is a particularly attractive residence permit for qualified professionals from third countries who wish to work and live in Germany. Compared to other residence permits, it offers numerous legal and practical advantages:

  • No knowledge of German is required when applying.

  • I have access to the German labor market with the same rights and obligations as German citizens.

  • My family and I have statutory health insurance.

  • I receive child benefit of €250 per month per child.

  • The path to a permanent residence permit is quick:

    • after 21 months with German B1.

    • after 27 months with German A1.

  • I can integrate quickly and have long-term planning security.

  • Family reunification is uncomplicated.

    • Since the change in the law in March 2024, in addition to spouses and children, parents and parents-in-law of EU Blue Card holders can also move to Germany.

    • This represents a significant relief, especially for Chinese skilled workers.

Would you like to find out whether you meet the requirements for the EU Blue Card? As a lawyer specializing in immigration law, I will examine your case individually and guide you through the entire application process – legally sound, efficient, and personally.

Requirements for the EU Blue Card – especially for Chinese lawyers

Chinese citizens who wish to work in Germany have the opportunity to obtain a legally secure residence permit with the EU Blue Card – provided they meet certain legal requirements:

  • Employment contract and salary

    • A concrete job offer or a valid employment contract with a German company is required.

    • The minimum gross annual salary for 2025 is:

      • 48,300 euros for regular jobs

      • 43,759.80 euros for occupations with a shortage of skilled workers (e.g. IT, engineering, medicine, mathematics, urban planning, logistics) or for newly acquired qualifications.

  • The EU Blue Card is aimed at university graduates. If your degree was obtained outside of Germany, it must be comparable to a German degree. This can be verified via:

    • the anabin database (the degree must be listed as “equivalent” or “corresponds” and the university must be listed as “H+”)

    • or through a certificate evaluation at the ZAB

  • IT specialists from China do not need a university degree if they:

    • have at least three years of professional experience within the last seven years

    • and have theoretical knowledge at an academic level (e.g. through certificates or training)

Application procedure for Chinese citizens – step by step to the EU Blue Card

Chinese skilled workers who wish to work in Germany with an EU Blue Card must complete a two-stage application process:

  • Step 1: Apply for a visa at the German Embassy in China

    • Since China is not a visa-exempt country, a national visa for the purpose of employment is required before entering Germany.

    • This visa must be applied for at the German diplomatic mission responsible for your province – an overview can be found on the website of the German Embassy in China (also available in Chinese).

  • Step 2: Apply for an EU Blue Card at the immigration office in Germany

    • After entering Germany, the actual application for the EU Blue Card is made at the responsible immigration authority at the future place of residence or work.

    • The documents to be submitted are similar to those for the visa application, but may vary regionally.

As a lawyer, I am familiar with the requirements of numerous immigration authorities across Germany and will support you in submitting all documents completely and correctly – for a smooth and quick process.

Do you need help applying for your EU Blue Card from China? As an experienced immigration lawyer, I am at your side and will guide you through the entire application process – from the visa application to the issuance of the Blue Card.

Accelerated procedure for Chinese applicants – faster access to the EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is very popular among highly qualified lawyers from China. However, due to high demand and the ongoing staff shortage at the German Embassy in China, processing times can be significantly longer – the regular procedure often takes several months to a year.

To avoid this bottleneck, I offer the accelerated skilled worker procedure. This allows for faster processing of your application for an EU Blue Card – both for the visa application at the embassy and at the immigration office in Germany.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • The employer submits the application directly in Germany.

  • Coordination by central immigration authorities ensures greater efficiency.

  • Accelerated deadlines and shortened processing times.

  • Total duration of the procedure: often only 3–5 months.

This procedure is an optimal solution, especially for Chinese lawyers, to avoid unnecessary waiting times and to start their new job in Germany as quickly as possible.

Would you like to take advantage of the accelerated skilled worker procedure and save time? As a lawyer specializing in immigration law, I will advise you individually and handle the entire process – in collaboration with your future employer.
