Since January 1, 2021, British nationals are no longer considered EU citizens and require a residence permit under the Residence Act to work in Germany. Anyone wishing to work in the EU after Brexit will be classified as a third-country national. Employment is therefore only possible with a suitable residence permit—for example, the EU Blue Card or the ICT Card for postings to German branches.
Despite these new hurdles, the British labor market remains extremely attractive for Germany: According to surveys, around 600,000 skilled workers plan to leave the UK due to Brexit. Germany leads the list of preferred destinations with 44%. This corresponds to a potential of over 260,000 well-trained workers who could significantly reduce Germany's skills shortage.
British professionals often bring excellent qualifications, international experience, and, with English as their native language, a real advantage for internationally active companies. The cultural proximity and high educational standards of the United Kingdom also significantly facilitate integration into the German labor market.
